Combining grand firework displays with street processions, fairgrounds and street food, Somerset’s carnivals are some of the most unique and well-attended events across the South West.

Carnival has a 400-year history in Somerset, which began with bonfires and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes in Bridgwater and has progressed into today’s spectacular processions. C&D South West have supported local carnivals across the county for many years, by providing lorries as collection floats and raising money for the carnivals and local charities.

Each area within the West Country is organised into carnival circuits, with each circuit providing a flair of friendly competition. Carnival clubs and groups travel many miles to line up and parade in colourful spectaculars that bring light, music and business to the towns. Most importantly, they raise thousands of pounds each year for local charities and good causes.

This year C&D South West supported fundraising initiatives in South Petherton, Wellington, Ilminster, Chard, Taunton, Bridgwater, and at Glastonbury Carnival by providing collection floats between September and November 2023.

Lorna Hammond, Managing Director of C&D South West said:
“We’re delighted to be involved in this year’s carnivals. Carnivals are a great spectacle in Somerset’s annual calendar and each float requires a hitch and transportation through the streets of Somerset’s towns, and that’s what we provide to many of the local annual carnival routes.
“We also offer our vehicles as collection floats for multiple local Somerset carnivals and have helped raise thousands of pounds for the local carnival committees and associated charities.
“Carnivals are a brilliant local event enjoyed by many across the West Country and we enjoy giving back to our local communities by supporting the events each year.”
